Shelter launch Great Home Debate ,Ellie Goulding shows her support on twitter social media

Recent research published from from Shelter reveals up to 69% of people in Wales fear it will be impossible for future generations to have a home to settle down in.

Single first-time buyer faces a nine-year wait to build a big enough deposit for a home in Wales, according to a new report.

The research reveals up to 69% of people in Wales fear it will be impossible for future generations to have a home to settle down in

Up to 74% of people in younger generations X (aged 37 to 50) and Y (15 to 36) said it is harder for them to get a home to settle down in than it was for their parents.

People aged 25-34 move once every five years of their lives compared to once every 12 years among pensioners.

The lack of affordable homes pushes many into privately rented accommodation, say Shelter.

The charity says many spend up to 50% of their income on rent. They say welfare reform also makes it hard for people to get good long-term accommodation.
Measures introduced to help first-time buyers

Director of Shelter Cymru, John Puzey said: “There’s increasing numbers of families with children in the private rented sector now in Wales. Then there’s this kind of insecurity at the back of their minds and the possibility they’ll have to keep moving and disruption to kids’ education.”

Wales spokesman for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Tony Filice said while salaries have remained flat in recent years, house prices have been rising.

'Out of reach'

The Shelter research shows for recent generations, the chance of a ‘forever home’ has been slipping increasingly out of reach.

Chris Ison/PA WireWill the Help to Buy ISA lead to more of these?

The Welsh Government scheme Help to Buy Wales offers shared equity loans of up to 20% of the price of a new-build worth up to £300,000.

The Welsh Government hopes the scheme, also available to existing home owners, supports the building of more than 6,000 new properties by 2021.

Help to save faster
The recently launched Help to Buy Isa , which gives first-time buyers a bonus of up to £3,000 towards their deposit, could help a single first-time buyer build their deposit up to 12 months faster, the report found.

The Lifetime Isa , announced in last week’s Budget and available by April 2017, will help savers even more, the report found.

This Isa, which will add 25p from the Government for each £1 put in by the saver, will see a first-time buyer typically building a deposit three years faster.

Mr Filice said: “What we mustn’t forget is that the Government has brought in schemes to help first-time buyers, which were not available for my parents or for grandparents.”

The research was based on a survey of 1,906 adults aged 15+ across Great Britain - including 107 in Wales.

Shelter’s research was commissioned as part of a new study into the meaning of home in Britain today 21/03/2016.

The charity wants to have the country’s biggest ever conversation about the meaning of home.

It will use people’s views to shape new standards for homes in the 21st century.

In its 50th year of striving to end bad housing and homelessness, Shelter, with support from British Gas, wants to have the country's biggest ever conversation about the meaning of home.

It will use people's views from the Great Home Debate to shape new standards for homes in the 21st century.

Campbell Robb, Shelter's chief executive, said: "The fact that vast numbers of people fear their grandchildren will never have a home to put down roots in, highlights the sad truth that this country is once again at the mercy of a housing crisis.

"While we have made progress over the last 50 years, our current housing shortage means millions are facing a lifetime of instability and, understandably, people are giving up hope. But if our history tells us anything, it's that together we can make things change.

Ellie Goulding English singer-songwriter multi-instrumentalist, Brit award winner Grammy nominee also showed her support on social media , with hundred of retweets and over a thousand likes on twitter.
"For the sake of future generations we cannot make this crisis someone else's problem. We're urging the nation to tell us what they really need from a home - so we can better help those who aren't lucky enough to have one. At Shelter we won't stop until we all have a place to call home."
Anyone can join the nation's Great Home Debate by visiting the website and sharing their thoughts on the meaning of home in Britain today.

‘There is a difference between a house and a home’

Brenda first spoke to Shelter Stories last year when she was the victim of a retaliatory eviction. She recounts her housing history.

Interior Designer Kelly Hoppen was showing her support

Bryan Halliday, Head of Corporate Citizenship at British Gas, said: "Through our ongoing partnership with Shelter we've already helped to improve living standards for thousands of families. This debate will help us to understand how we can help more people in the future to have a safe, warm and stable place to call home."
