In the Ukrainian capital Kiev, a prominent journalist has been killed in a bomb attack .The bomb exploded in a car in which Pavel Sheremet was seated. However details remain sketchy.
His partner was Alyona Pritula, the founder and chief editor of the title.
The car was hers, but she was not in the vehicle at the time.
A spokesman for the Ukrainian general prosecutor said: 'Investigators preliminarily qualify this event as murder. A pre-trial investigation has been launched.'
The car exploded on the corner of Bogdana Khmelnitskogo and Ivana Franko streets, opposite McDonald's.
MP Anton Gerashchenko, an aide to the Interior Minister, said: 'This is a cynical and well-planned murder.
One of the most well known journalists of Ukraine, Pavel Sheremet, died from the explosion of an explosive device located in the car died he was driving.
"According to preliminary data, there was a bomb. Whether it was an improvised explosive device or not , experts are still examining the scene", said head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Communications Department Artem Shevchenko in the Ukrainian capital.
Sheremet had intended to travel by car to a local radio station to host a talk show, as Sorjan Schkirjak, an adviser to the Interior Ministry, via Facebook announced. "The bomb had an explosive force of about 400 to 600 grams of TNT," read the statement Interior Ministry in Kiev.
Prosecutor General Yuri Lutsenko promised a thorough investigation of the crime. The Ukrainian Association of Journalists described the death of colleagues as murder.
Only a year ago the journalist critical of the government Oles Busina ,was shot in Kiev . Murders in the troubled former Soviet republic had caused an international sensation. In 2000, was the founder of "Ukrainskaja Pravda", Georgy Gongadze, corpse had been decapitated and doused in dioxine, apparently to make identification more difficult; forensic investigations found that the dioxine bath and decapitation had occurred while the victim was still alive.
Award Winning Journalist
Born in Minsk in 1971 Sheremet had studied economics. He lived and worked in Belarus and Russia and been a long time campaigning critic of the Belarusian President Aleksander Lukashenko. Sheremet was a prominent supporter of the opposition movement Maidan in Ukraine and condemned repeatedly Russian intervention in Ukraine.
For his work Sheremet had been repeatedly awarded. In 2002 he was awarded the OSCE Prize for Democracy and Journalism. He was considered a good friend of the Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, who was shot in February 2015 the Kremlin.
