Building more affordable homes is essential to making sure we all can make the best of living in London. Too many people struggle to afford a place to live right now - whether to buy or rent.
The homes shortage is making it harder to live in our great city and it’s bad for business too.
A New Homes Team at City Hall: Sadiq will set up a new team to tackle the capital’s chronic housing shortage, which will report directly to him. It will act as a developer, drive the building of new homes for social rent, London Living Rent and first time buyers and will also help Councils develop their own new homes teams and bring forward land and investment for building.
Putting Londoners first: Too many people cannot afford to buy in the area where they want to live and work. That is why Sadiq will introduce a 50 per cent affordable housing target for any new development.

He will also use mayoral planning powers to stop 'buy-to-leave' which distorts the housing market, and put first-time buyers and local tenants first.
Getting more investment into housing: We are not building enough new affordable homes - especially social housing.
Sadiq will begin by investing the unspent millions in the Mayor of London’s affordable homes fund, and by developing 'London Home Bonds' and pension fund investments. He will also fight for councils to be free to invest prudentially in new homes.
Land for homes: The Mayor is responsible for land on which thousands of new homes could be built.
Sadiq will bring forward more land owned by public bodies like TfL for development by the New Homes Team and Councils for development. He will also support development in 'home zones' and work with boroughs to identify all available brownfield land in public and private ownership that is suitable for development.
